Apparently, living in a war zone was not enough suffering for around a dozen families that relocated to Hamilton, Ontario.
One thing Syria is not familiar with is bed bugs. So when these families moved into an apartment complex riddled with these gross bugs, they were shocked. Not long after moving in, they woke up covered in bites, and the poor kids were crying in the night from the painful stings.

Pest controllers were called on several occasions, but their efforts were in vain, and the bed bugs kept coming back. It was a nightmare!
Ali Marathi, a refugee solicitor, said: "They didn't know what these pests were, obviously, it was traumatic for them."
This apartment complex was well known for its bed bug problem, noted Marathi.
Once they verified the infestation, a two-year battle began. Assisted by local advocacy groups, the refugees sought legal compensation from Diamond International and Melvin Apartments Incorporated. A dozen families broke their leases and went after the apartment rental agency for the harm done to their property, such as clothing, bedding, and furniture. The agency then countersued for unpaid rent.
In June 2018, all the parties agreed on an undisclosed settlement. "Our clients are happy to have reached a settlement with Melvin Apartments on terms that are satisfactory to both parties," recited Marathi.
When this lawsuit came to light, it shined brightly on Canada's stubborn bed bug challenge. About ten years ago, infestations started rising at a rapid speed in the country. They have also traveled to other countries, including the United States. Canada has spent many millions to try and subdue this blood-sucking insect. Unfortunately, the swarm has only continued to engulf homes.
