5 Reasons Bed Bugs Love Us

Have you ever noticed that most bugs are happy to leave us alone? Shake a bush, and most insects will fly away from you. Try to squash a spider, and it will try to run away.
But some bugs are just jerks. Mosquitoes come to mind. You might chase away a wasp or yellow jacket, but it will rush you and send you screaming back into the house. And, of course, bed bugs aren’t about to leave us alone — those little pains in the butt (literally, sometimes).
Like coyotes, bed bugs thrive because they’ve learned to adapt to the modern human world. Why do they like us so much? Why won’t they leave us alone? Why are things so bad when they set up their home in our home?
1. We Tell Them Where We Are
As mentioned, bed bugs are primarily attracted by the carbon dioxide (CO2) humans exhale. We might move around most of the time in our house or at least be conscious of things crawling on us as we sit. But when we’re sleeping, we stay in one place and breathe constantly, letting them know exactly where we are.To make things worse, we don’t stir up air currents and disperse CO2 when we sleep, so it all just remains close to us. That cloud we accumulate might as well be a cartoon word bubble saying, “Come bite me” to the bed bugs.
2. We’re Deep Sleepers
Compared to most mammals, humans are very deep sleepers. If you have any pets, you've probably noticed that they wake up extremely fast and are ready to move when something exciting happens. Prey animals, such as rabbits, even sleep with their eyes partially open. They're always ready to bolt at the first sign of trouble!
But humans are conscious that we're safe, even when asleep. We know that there aren't bears about to break in or wolves amassing outside our door. (And even if there are wolves, they don't have the keys to your front door.) For this reason, we tend to sleep deeply.
That means we're not easily roused by the biting of the bed bug (which already uses an anesthetic to numb your skin before biting, much like a mosquito does). But we're also not being woken as they crawl along on our body hair, which means they can hike around our body, find that perfect picnic spot, and suck and suck without waking us up.
3. We Provide A Safe Space
Before the invention of houses, most bed bugs would be searching for some mammal to dine on. But there would also be 100 spiders every few feet trying to catch them, assassin bugs waiting for them to pass by, ambush bugs laying in wait to suck out their bug juices.
But humans love to keep insects out of their houses (your interest in bed bug spray confirms that). So, those natural predators aren’t in our house, and once bed bugs are in your home, there’s nothing to take them out—well, except for our eco-friendly, natural plant-based bed bug-killing products!
4. There’s Nothing Else For Them To Feed On
If you’re camping under the stars and a bed bug bites you, it will retreat to a safe place when you wake up. But if you’re gone, it will not necessarily look for a human host. It’s going to feed on any mammal it can find, so when a raccoon stops by to clean up the campfire crumbs you left, it’s going to get its blood sucked. The night after, it might be a mouse and then a squirrel. But when it comes to bed bugs, we’ve removed all their food sources...except ourselves! (and our pets, unfortunately). Instead of giving them a fresh target every night, we’ve trapped them in our house, given them a safe, soft place to stay, and put out our skin buffet in the same place every night. Unless you want to let the raccoons into your bedroom every night, it’s best to find a natural remedy for bed bugs that work.
5. We Taste Good
We have blood; therefore, we taste good to them. While the same meal night after night might not appeal to you, bed bugs have no qualms about slurping the same blood every night.Unfortunately, nothing we eat can affect our blood so much that bed bugs will leave us alone. Eat all the garlic you want, but the bed bugs will still dine on you every night.
